Oda a la solidaridad
¿Y allí qué hicieron? ¿Sabes?
No te escapes. Ahora me ayudarás.
Ode to solidarity
And what did they accomplish there? Do you know? Do you agree with it? Who? Something happens and it's your fault. But you won't be aware of it. I am warning you now. You cannot leave things like this. Where is your heart? You have a voice. You're looking at me with bewildered eyes. It seems that suddenly you realize that you are missing a hand, two eyes, a tongue, or hope.
But is it possible, Pedro or Juan or Diego that you lost something so necessary without knowing it? Were you sleepwalking? Didn't you see the eyes of the people? Didn't you enter a train, a barracks, a kitchen? Didn't you notice the masked light? Haven't you noticed the hands of the passerby? Not only the hands, but the person, and the object of your quest?
Look at yourself. Don't look anywhere else, because I am not calling your neighbor — I am calling you. The others said to me, "Search for him-- we are alone." Spring's newborn leaves asked, "What is Pedro up to?" I didn't know. I could not answer, and then each day's loaf of bread, and the star-drenched sky, all creation asks where Juan lives, and if Diego has wandered astray; and they, they, there are alone each day, solitary, surrounded by silence and walls while you and I smoke. Smoky circles, arabesques, rings of smoke, rings of smoke and smoke. Are they lives? It is uncertain. Now Don't escape. you will help me. A finger, a word, your sign, and when fingers, signs, and words walk and work something will appear in the still air, the music of solidarity coming from a window, a star piercing the awesome nighttime peace, and then you will sleep serenely. You will live in peace. You will be part of the music, responding at the window: the light that shatters the separation.
