Oda al tiempo venidero

Tiempo, me llamas. Antes
eras
espacio puro,
ancha pradera.
Hoy
hilo o gota
eres,
luz delgada
que corre como liebre hacia las zarzas
de la cóncava noche.

Pero,
ahora
me dices, tiempo, aquello
que ayer no me dijiste:

tus pasos apresura,
tu corazón reposa,
desarrolla tu canto.

El mismo soy. ¿No soy? ¿Quién en el cauce
de las aguas que corren
identifica el río?

Sólo sé que allí mismo
en una sola
puerta
mis corazón golpea,
desde ayer, desde lejos,
desde entonces,
desde mi nacimiento.
Allí
donde responde
el eco oscuro
del mar
que canta y canto
y que conozco
sólo
por un ciego silbido
por un rayo
en las olas,
por sus anchas espumas en la noche.

Así, pues, tiempo, en vano
me has medido,
en vano transcurriste
adelantando
caminos al errante.

Junto a una sola puerta
pasé toda la noche,
solitario, cantando.
Y ahora
que tu luz se adelgaza
como animal que corre
perdiéndose en la sombra
me dices,
al oído,
lo que no me enseñaste
y supe siempre.


Ode to future days

Time, you're calling me. Before
you were
pure space,
a far-reaching meadow.
Today,
you are
a thread, a droplet,
or slim light
running like a hare into the brambles
of concave night.

But
now
you tell me, time,
the mystery you held back yesterday.

Your footsteps hurry;
your heart rests;
your song unwinds.

I am the same man — am I not? —
Who in the wild waters of the riverbed
speaks the river's name?

I only know that right there,
at only one
door,
my heart knocks
from yesterday, from faraway,
from that age,
from my birth.
Beyond
where the sea's
dim echo
answers
with lyrics and I sing —
I am only
aware of
a blind whistle,
a ray in the waves,
penetrating the wide waves of night.

So, well, time, you
measured me in vain,
in vain, you advanced,
anticipating
the passages of a wanderer.

Next to just one door,
I passed the integral night,
in solitude, singing.
And now
that your light is tapering
like an animal on the run,
losing itself in the shadowlands,
you whisper into my ear,
the secret that you did not teach me —
and I knew it all along.
